Is It Laminitis or Founder?
| Laminitis is often called founder but
this is incorrect although laminitis can and frequently does lead
to founder.
Laminitis is an infection of the laminae, or tissue that connects the coffin bone to the hoof wall. As the layers of the hoof wall delaminate (separate) this will cause the horse extreme pain. The condition may range from mild to severe and usually occurs in the horses front feet but can also affect the hind feet. |

Laminitis or founder results in tissue damage of the horses feet and may cause severe complications. Laminitis does not however, always result in founder. In acute cases, permanent damage to the laminae may result. Laminitis has a wide range of variables among individual horses. The attachment of the coffin bone to the hoof wall breaks down and the entire weight of the horse bears down on the coffin bone; as a result the bone rotates down and can actually be pushed right through the sole of the horses foot to the ground. This is an extremely serious condition. Contact your veterinary for a diagnosis and treatment options. |
