Lyme Disease in the Horse Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused by the bite of the 'deer tick' or the 'black legged tick'.The disease is transmitted from the bite of an infected tick to the host animal. Adult ticks, which appear in the early spring and fall, are the most likely to feed on your horse. |

A common blood test is used diagnosis and to detect antibodies of the bacterium (Borrelia burgdorferi). Lyme disease is typically treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs such as 'bute' and possibly medicines to help replace the normal intestinal bacteria that is killed by the antibiotics.
