Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused by the bite of the 'deer tick' or the 'black legged tick'.

The disease is transmitted from the bite of an infected tick to the host animal.

Adult ticks, which appear in the early spring and fall, are the most likely to feed on your horse.

Symptoms may include:

[a] .. Lameness
[b] .. depression
[c] .. soreness in the legs
[d] .. loss of appetite
[e] .. restlessness
[f] .. fever
[g] .. swollen joints
[h] .. and or swollen glands
[i] .. Laminitis (founder)
[j] .. abortions in mares
[k] .. chronic weight loss.
[l] .. nervous system problems

A common blood test is used diagnosis and to detect antibodies of the bacterium (Borrelia burgdorferi).

Lyme disease is typically treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs such as 'bute' and possibly medicines to help replace the normal intestinal bacteria that is killed by the antibiotics.

Your veterinarian will determine which course of action to follow
dependent on the diagnosis.
