The Signs of Navicular Disease
| A horse with navicular disease will tend to place
its weight on the toe while walking.
This is to avoid putting pressure on the heel area, which is where the inflamed navicular bone and bursa are located. Since the horse will not place his weight on the heel it takes longer to stop the stride. The horses gait will be rough and will give the appearance of lameness. |
|
The horse will usually be lame after his work-out but with rest this condition will disappear for the time being. Navicular disease causes poor circulation in the foot area and the hoof may contract and become smaller. The outlook for the horse may not be the happiest, but there are many methods of treatment that will relieve the pain and suffering of this condition in the horse and make it useful again. |
