It is caused by bacterial organism known as Ehrlichia Risticii.

The exact mode of transmission is still unknown but an insect vector may be responsible. Potomac Horse Fever a seasonal disease occurring most often in late spring through the early fall months.

To treat these symptoms Oxytetracycline is usually the drug of choice,
although it may also be treated with tetracycline antibiotics.

Treatment should include electrolyte fill-in and aggressive IV fluids.
