A Horse that Pulls Back.
| Q: I have a mare that pulls
back only when you first put a saddle on her and cinch
her up. I have to cinch her gradually or she will go over backwards. She
is 6 years old and well trained to ride with no other bad habits.
Do you have any suggestions on how to cure her of this habit? A: I have a mare that does exactly the same thing. We had a bad experience with her going over backwards as we didn't know about this vice. |

What I do with her is girth her up gradually. Put the girth up just one or two holes (depending on how touchy she is) then walk her in a circle, and so on until the girth is tight enough. After a while, It could take a year maybe, she will become less edgy about the girth being done up. You will find you won't have to walk her for as long, and can take the girth up more in one go. I have gotten into the habit now that I do the girth up gradually with every horse. I know it takes a little bit more time. But if you think about it, it's a lot kinder to the horse, and it's worth that extra bit of time if it means your horse isn't going to go over every time you saddle her up. |
