Rabies affects animals and humans alike and is cause by a virus (Lyssa, Hydrophobia), transmitted through the salvia of infected animals such as the skunk, fox, raccoon, wild dog or bat.

The disease can spread quickly from the bite of an infected animal.

Symptoms rapidly progress over a 5 to 7 day period, resulting in the collapse and death of the horse.

A once, yearly vaccination is highly recommended for horses in endemic areas.

Young horses can begin vaccinations at the age of four months with a yearly booster given annually thereafter.
